Laboratory

Physical resources available in the CRTS (Civil) are given below for different Laboratories of Civil engineering consultancy and tests.

Structural and Material Engineering Laboratories

The Structural and Material Engineering Laboratory is maintained by a group of highly qualified professionals, who are among the leading experts in the respective fields. This sector consists of two laboratories – structural engineering laboratory and material engineering laboratory. Both of the laboratories are well equipped with modern hardware and software facilities for carrying out testing of various construction materials. Notably, two universal testing machines are currently available at the structural engineering laboratory and another MTS servo-controlled loading systems is forthcoming, with a range of jacks suitable for programmed cyclic and fatigue testing. A computer-based data acquisition system is also available for on-line data reduction and advanced analysis. Routine quality assurance testing of various construction materials like steel, concrete, brick, cement, timber, plastic, rubber etc. are carried out in those laboratories according to the relevant standards. Expert services are provided on concrete mix design and the design of various reinforced and prestressed concrete structures as well as steel structures like high-rise buildings, bridges and towers etc. Modem structural analysis and design software and many other tools are used for analysis and safety evaluation of structures.

Geotechnical Engineering Laboratories

The Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory is an integral part of the Department of Civil Engineering at KUET and has been providing research facilities for both undergraduate and postgraduate students along with consultancy and material quality testing services since its establishment. The Laboratory is well-equipped with instruments for evaluating all engineering and physical properties of soils and geotextiles. Other services include sub-soil investigation, design and analysis of foundations and soil improvement. Moreover, the computational facilities and relevant experts for the analysis and design of various geotechnical problems are available for research and consultancy services. Over the past years, this division has achieved considerable expertise and experience in these areas and has developed a wide reputation both at regional and national levels.

Environmental Engineering Laboratories

The environmental engineering laboratory is advanced in its kind and possesses equipment and facilities for detailed analysis of water, wastewater, industrial wastes, air and noise quality, and model testing of treatment systems. It has been providing testing, design and consultancy services for more than three decades in diverse areas including: water supply; water, wastewater and industrial waste quality and treatment, water modeling; solid and hazardous waste management; biogas technology; air and noise, environmental management planning; and environmental impact assessment and monitoring. The group of highly qualified teaching professionals of this division has immense research-experiences at home and abroad.

Transportation Engineering & Surveying Laboratories

The Transportation Engineering Division has been providing testing, design and consultancy services since its inception in diverse areas including quality control & testing of highway materials, geometric design of highways, structural design of pavements, field investigations of highway projects, traffic control &management, NMT issues, accident analysis and safety measures, feasibility study of transport projects, preparation & evaluation of contractualdocuments. Highway and transport specialists of this division have experience in highway materials, highway design, maintenance and improvement works, survey works, transport economics, transport planning & modeling, traffic control & management, traffic safety, GIS and simulation works. This branch of Civil Engineering is consisted with two well-equipped laboratories including Transportation Engineering Laboratory and Surveying Laboratory. The Surveying Laboratory is equipped with modern equipment, such as GPS-based surveying equipment, total stations, theodolites and automatic levels for basic instructional research and consultancy purposes. This laboratory has been using to obtain any topographic information that can help in the capstone design projects, such as highway design and land development.

Water Resources Engineering Laboratories

The method of investigation of this laboratory is divided into three categories: Analytical, Numerical and Experimental. Areas of expertise include: investigation of hydrologic, riverine and ground water processes; and operation of physical and numerical models. The Hydraulics Laboratory consists of a physical modeling facility and a numerical modeling facility that work in tandem; one extrapolates results, and the other verifies and calibrates the results. The physical modeling facility features multiple hydraulic flumes of varying functions and sizes. The larger flume is a 0.6-m-wide by 16-m-long tilting one (under construction). Adjacent to this flume sits a 0.08-m-wide by 5.0-m-long tilting flume presently using for various basic experiments. The flume is equipped with basic flow and depth measuring apparatus. For measuring the two-dimensional velocity field, the laboratory is equipped with Electro-magnetic Current meter with digital display unit, which is parallely connected with PC. The multipurpose hydrologic apparatus equipped with artificial rainfall and runoff system is also available in the laboratory. The apparatus is also used for determining the aquifer characteristics and measuring the well discharge for a particular unconfined aquifer. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-based simulation techniques is available for modeling the open channel, river flow and sediment distribution systems.
