Structural and Material Engineering Laboratories
The Structural and Material Engineering sector is maintained by a group of highly qualified professionals, who are among the leading experts in the respective fields. This sector consists of two laboratories – structural engineering laboratory and material engineering laboratory. Both of the laboratories are well equipped with modern hardware and software facilities for carrying out testing of
various construction materials. Notably, two universal testing machines are currently available at the structural engineering laboratory and
another MTS servo-controlled loading systems is forthcoming, with a range of jacks suitable for programmed cyclic and fatigue testing.
A computer-based data acquisition system is also available for on-line data reduction and advanced analysis. Routine quality assurance
testing of various construction materials like steel, concrete, brick, cement, timber, plastic, rubber etc. are carried out in those
laboratories according to the relevant standards. Expert services are provided on concrete mix design and the design of various reinforced
and prestressed concrete structures as well as steel structures like high-rise buildings, bridges and towers etc. Modem structural analysis
and design software and many other tools are used for analysis and safety evaluation of structures.
Testing Services
- Routine tests for evaluation of strength and other properties of structural materials like steel, concrete, cement, brick, stone, timber, rubber, plastic etc.
- Creep testing of structural materials
- Test for properties of aggregates
- Non-destructive and partial non-destructive testing of structures by Schmidt hammer, core cutting of concrete, rebar detection and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV).
- Impact test and hardness test of metal specimens
- Calibration of pressure gages and other load measurement machines and devices
- Calibration of various apparatuses related to cement and concrete materials.
Design and Consultancy Laboratories
- Design of concrete mixes
- Design of buildings, bridges, airports, offshore structures, drainage structures
- Vetting on structural designs for various structures
- Assessment of safety for old structures
- Investigation into the causes of poor durability and failure of structures
- Strengthening and retrofitting of existing structures
- Preparation of technical specifications for various structural engineering projects
- Technical evaluation of bids related to structural engineering projects
Geotechnical Engineering Laboratories
The Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory is an integral part of the Department of Civil Engineering at KUET and has been providing research facilities for both undergraduate and postgraduate students along with consultancy and material quality testing services since its establishment. The Laboratory is well-equipped with instruments for evaluating all engineering and physical properties of
soils and geotextiles. Other services include sub-soil investigation, design and analysis of foundations and soil improvement. Moreover, the computational facilities and relevant experts for the analysis and design of various geotechnical problems are available for research and consultancy services. Over the past years, this division has achieved considerable expertise and experience in these areas and has developed a wide reputation both at regional and national levels.
